The Short Answer
The dry season from November to April (northeast monsoon) is traditionally considered the best time to visit the Maldives, with the most sunshine, calmest seas, and best visibility for diving and snorkeling.
But here's what most travel sites won't tell you: the wet season (May to October) has its own compelling advantages, including dramatically lower prices, better surfing conditions, and incredible marine encounters.
Understanding the Seasons
The Maldives has two monsoon seasons that shape everything from weather to marine life:
Northeast Monsoon (Iruvai) — November to April
- Weather: Mostly dry, sunny, low humidity
- Sea conditions: Calm and clear
- Visibility: Excellent (30–50 meters)
- Prices: Peak season rates
- Crowds: Highest occupancy, book well in advance
Southwest Monsoon (Hulhangu) — May to October
- Weather: More rainfall, higher humidity, occasional storms
- Sea conditions: Rougher on western sides, plankton-rich waters
- Visibility: Reduced but still good (15–25 meters)
- Prices: Significant discounts (30–50% off peak rates)
- Crowds: Lower occupancy, more privacy
