Speedboat Transfers

Speedboat transfers serve resorts in the North Malé Atoll, South Malé Atoll, and a few resorts in nearby atolls. They are the simplest, most flexible, and most affordable transfer option.

How It Works

1. You land at Velana International Airport (MLE)
2. A resort representative meets you in the arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name
3. You are escorted to the resort's speedboat dock (a short walk or van ride from the terminal)
4. You board the speedboat and head to your resort

The entire process — from stepping off your international flight to arriving at your resort — can take as little as 45 minutes for the closest islands.

Advantages

• Available 24 hours — If your flight lands at midnight, your speedboat is waiting. This is the single biggest advantage for travelers on long-haul flights with evening arrivals
• No scheduling complications — Boats depart when you are ready, not on a fixed timetable
• Generous luggage allowance — Bring the extra suitcase. Speedboats rarely have strict weight limits
• Lower cost — Often the most affordable transfer, and some resorts include it in the room rate
• Smooth in calm conditions — The lagoons within atolls are typically sheltered and calm

Disadvantages

• Can be rough in choppy seas — During the southwest monsoon (May through October), open-water crossings can be uncomfortable
• Limited to nearby atolls — If your dream resort is in Baa Atoll or further, speedboat is not an option

How It Works

1. You land at Velana International Airport

3. You check in at the seaplane lounge, where you will wait for your flight (waits of 30 minutes to 2 hours are normal)
4. When called, you walk to the dock, board the seaplane, and enjoy 20-60 minutes of some of the most spectacular aerial scenery on Earth
5. The seaplane lands in the lagoon near your resort, and a boat transfers you the final few meters to the island

The Seaplane Experience

There is no other transfer like it. Looking down through the seaplane windows, you see the entire structure of the atolls — the deep blue of the ocean floor, the turquoise of shallow lagoons, sandbanks glowing white, and tiny green islands dotting the reef. Many travelers describe the seaplane ride as one of the highlights of their entire trip.

The aircraft are small — typically 15-19 seats — and unpressurized. Earplugs are provided because the propeller engines are loud. The planes fly at about 1,500 feet, low enough to see dolphins, mantas, and even sharks from above.

Seaplanes operate in daylight hours only — roughly 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Domestic Flights + Speedboat

For resorts in the southern atolls or those where seaplane service is impractical, a domestic flight on a scheduled airline connects Malé to regional airports, followed by a speedboat transfer from the regional airport to the resort.

2. Transfer to the domestic terminal (same airport, short walk)
3. Board a scheduled Maldivian Airlines or Manta Air flight to a regional airport (Kadhdhoo, Dhaalu, Maafaru, etc.)

Advantages Over Seaplanes

• More predictable schedules — Fixed departure times rather than the variable seaplane scheduling

Disadvantages

• Two transfers instead of one — The airport-to-airport flight plus the speedboat adds logistical complexity
• Fixed schedules — If you miss the flight, you wait for the next one (unlike a seaplane, which can sometimes be rescheduled)
• Less scenic — Flying at higher altitude means less of the stunning low-level atoll views

Regional Airports

• Immigration: Lines can be long during peak hours (multiple international flights arriving simultaneously). Allow 30-60 minutes
• Visa: Most nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival — just have your passport, hotel booking confirmation, and return ticket
• SIM cards: Several counters sell tourist SIM cards with data packages in the arrivals area. Dhiraagu and Ooredoo are the main providers. Expect to pay $15-$30 for a SIM with enough data for your stay
